PHOTOS: 10 Odd Wedding Rituals of All Times

1)The tradition of not allowing the newlyweds to use the bathroom for 3 days.

Well, this one can get painful and ugly. Members of the Tidong community in Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia do not allow newlyweds to go to the bathroom for 3 days and 3 nights. If they do, they will have bad luck, apparently. Bad luck may come in the form of a broken union, the death of children, or even infertility. The couple is starved and given little water.

2) The ritual of marrying animals to exorcise ghosts.

In some parts of India it is believed that if a baby girl has a tooth rooted to her upper gum, it's the obvious sign that she will be eaten by a tiger or something in the near future, because ghosts hate her. Therefore, she must marry an animal. The good news is that this is nothing but a mock ceremony and the couple don't have to consummate the wedding. It's just to ward off the evil spirits so the girl can marry a real boy some time later.

3)The ritual where guests pay to dance with the bride.

This Polish tradition involves all of wedding guests, the bride, dancing, money and an apron. At the wedding reception, the bride will dance with her father, while a relative holds out an apron. Guests who place money in the apron win the opportunity to dance with the bride. After a time, the groom will throw in his wallet, thus surpassing all the other contributions. He will then whisk away his new wife on their honeymoon.

4) The brides who wear rings on their toes instead of fingers.

Whereas most jewelry exchanged at weddings involves placing rings on fingers, Hindu brides use the Bichiya, which is the tradition of wearing their wedding rings on their feet. The ring is usually silver and placed on a woman's left foot, specifically on her great toe (which is next to the big toe). The groom slips the ring on the bride's foot during the ceremony, and these rings are only worn by married women.

5)The ritual of smashing dishes.

The origin of this tradition is unknown, but it's thought that the cacophonous sounds caused by the smashing of the cookery represent the inevitable future disturbances that the couple will face throughout their married lives. By breaking the dishes beforehand, the community is preparing the couple for the obstacles ahead and simultaneously wishing them luck.

6) The practice of kidnapping brides.

Bride kidnapping, also known as marriage by abduction or marriage by capture, is a practice throughout history and around the world in which a man abducts the woman he wishes to marry. It's said that bride kidnapping still occurs in some cultures like the Romani, also known as Gypsies. If you manage to forcefully kidnap a girl and keep her by your side for 2-3 days, she officially becomes your wife. Pretty crazy, right?

7)The ritual of blackening the bride.

It's part of a hazing ritual that actually happens before the wedding. The bride is taken by surprise, by hands down the crummiest friends you could have, and covered from head to toe with foul substances such as eggs, various sauces, feathers, and, well, you name it….The ritual of covering brides and grooms in treacle, soot and flour used to be carried out to ward off evil spirits. It still happens in parts of Scotland.

8)The ritual where grooms jumps over a broom.

Jumping the broom is a time-honored wedding tradition in which the bride and groom jump over a broom during the ceremony. The act symbolizes a new beginning and a sweeping away of the past, and can also signify the joining of two families or offer a respectful nod to family ancestors.

9) The ritual of beating the groom's feet.

Most men look forward to the conclusion of their weddings, but in South Korea the groom has to endure a beating before he can retire with his bride. After the wedding ceremony, friends of the groom take off his socks, tie a rope around the ankles, and start beating the soles of his feet with dried yellow corvina. Yellow corvina is a kind of fish! It is done to make the groom stronger before the first wedding night.

Driver absconds with truck first day of employment

The truck. Inset: Omoshanu

A driver with Dunamis Excel Company, Niyi Omoshanu, has allegedly absconded with an LT-40 pickup filled with the product of the company.

The driver allegedly took off with the properties on his first day at work in the firm.
Subsequent police investigation had shown that every document and information that Omoshanu presented to the company were false.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer, who pleaded to be identified only by his first name, Funso, told PUNCH Metro that Omoshanu was employed without getting his approval.
He said, “My company produces both bottled and sachet water but I am not always at our factory because we have manager who takes charge of things there.

“We own three trucks and often use them to make deliveries to our customers.”
Funso said when the driver resumed, there was a “minor challenge” at the factory as some goods due to be delivered to a customer could not be moved to their destination.

He said, “On Feburary 11, 2013, we were scheduled to make a delivery at Adeniji Adele on Lagos Island but the driver, who was to make the delivery had not shown up.

“The general manager had interviewed Omoshanu with the aim of verifying his contacts later.
“Since there was no other driver available, the manager decided to allow Omoshanu begin work so that he could make the delivery.”

He said about 12pm, Omoshanu was accompanied by two motor-boys working for the company to make the delivery.

Odegbami said, “I was told that as they were about to take off after the delivery, one of the motor-boys discovered that the payment made by the customer was incomplete. So he came out of the vehicle and went back to the lady. After a while, Omoshanu told the second motor-boy to get his colleague so that they could leave the area on time because of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

“The diver told them that he was not comfortable being on the spot where the vehicle was parked.”

Immediately the second boy went into the customer’s office, Omoshanu took off with the vehicle and the remaining goods.

The first boy, who came out, allegedly chased the vehicle. But Omoshanu was too fast and drove in the direction of Third Mainland.

When the general manager received the news, he dug up Omoshanu’s curriculum vitae and referees.
However, every one of them turned out to be false.

On his CV, Omoshanu had given his house address as 218 Enuowa Street, Lagos Island. But police discovered that it was a non-existent house number.

On his driver’s licence, there was a different address in Ilupeju. That adress turned out to be false also. His telephone number 07011940708 had also been switched off.

The white LT-40 truck, with registration number, KJA 486 XD, has also not been found.
Funso said, “We took it upon ourselves to check all LASTMA stations and Vehicle Inspection Unit offices, but the truck was not found. The case is still at Soloki Police Station Aguda.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident.
Braide said, “After the matter was reported at the police station, the suspect was trailed to an address at Okokomaiko. The address turned out to be fake.

The suspect is still at large and investigation is still ongoing.”

Nearly Half Saudi Women Are Beaten At Home

Nearly half Saudi women are beaten up by their husbands or other family members at home and many of them are hit by sticks and head cover, according to a university study published in local newspapers on Tuesday.

Nearly Half Saudi Women Are Beaten At HomeSurprisingly, the study found that the Bedouin men who still dwell the desert in the conservative Gulf Kingdom, are less violent than Saudi men in urban areas.

The study was conducted by Dr Lateefa Abdul Lateef, a social science professor at King Saud University in the Capital Riyadh. It involved female students at the university and some Saudi women covered by the government’s social security.

The study showed that nearly half those covered by social security and more than a third of the female students at the university are beaten up at home," Dr Lateefa said.

"Husbands were found to be beating their wives more than others. They are followed by fathers, then brothers then sons…Hands and sticks were found to be used mostly in beating women, following by men’s head cover and to a lesser extent, sharp objects."

The study showed that husbands beating their wives included both educated and non-educated men and that "those dwelling in the desert are less violent with their wives than those living in cities or villages."

The study found that the main reasons for violence against women include poor religious motives, drug addiction and alcoholism, arrogance and a tendency to control, psychological problems, poverty, and unemployment.
